As you may have heard in the media, the major credit scoring Equifax Inc suffered a major hack that has resulted in the exposure of data for about 143 million Americans. More recently, it has been determined that many Canadians may have been affected by the breach as well.
The theft included names, social insurance numbers, birth dates, and addresses, among other information, all of which could lead to potential identity theft.
Equifax in the US had set up a special website where you could login to find out if you were affected by the breach, however no such site has been set up for Canadians. Equifax Canada has stated they will be sending out notices by mail to all those who have been affected.
If you don't want to wait for the mail, Canadians can sign up on their main page, which gives you a 30 day trial. Just remember to cancel before the end of the 30 days to ensure your card is not charged. Look for any recent unusual activity, and if you find any, contact Equifax immediately.
